Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a community-led nongovernment organization was established in 1985 in the Gaibandha district. Presently Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) has been working in Gaibandha, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Dinajpur, Bogra, Joypurhat, Kushtia, Panchagarh, and Lalmonirhat districts. The organization has gained well reputation and achieved notable changes in development, particularly in the area of Livelihood Improvement, Education for Children, Gender Equality, Women Empowerment, Human Rights, and Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate change through various development projects. Over the period of time, altogether approximately 45,000 families came out from extreme poverty situations through financial and technical support of GUK. Besides, approximately 120,000 families are directly involved at present in different interventions of the organization.

Three big rivers e.g. Teesta, Brahmaputra, and Jamuna flow through the Gaibandha district. The district is extremely poverty and disaster-prone. The people have to lead their life by struggling against flood, riverbank erosion, drought, cold spell, and seasonal food crisis almost every year. The economy of the area is completely dependent on agriculture, which cannot ensure working opportunities for a large number of landless day laborers round the year. During the lean period, the people did not have any other option than to sell their labor in advance. Male members of many families used to go to other places of the country in search of work, leaving the women and children behind in big uncertainty. The economic and social status of women was not good at all. Although they had to work day and night to take care of the children and other household works, they had no proper recognition. They had very limited access to health and education. They were not aware of their rights. Different types of superstitions, religious fanaticism, and backward social dogmas in rural areas had been dominating the life of women. In these circumstances, a group of dedicated social activists established Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) in 1985 for the purpose to reduce poverty by bringing positive sustainable changes in the lives and livelihoods of disadvantaged poor people.

The Organisation is working with the aim to bring a sustainable improvement in the lives of disadvantaged poor people through implementing different integrated programs focusing on Livelihood & Food Security, Education & Child Protection, Disaster Risk Reduction & Emergency Response,  Climate Change Adaptation, Safe Migration, Inclusive Financing, Women Empowerment, Human Rights, Good Governance, Skills Development & Job Placement of Youths, Health, Nutrition & WASH, Disability Inclusive Development, Agriculture & Market Linkage, Research & Policy Influence, etc.

Initially, the organization started its activities in the Gaibandha district, and presently it is working in 12 districts across Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions including Rohingya Refugee camps in Ukhia and Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
